if you are at all interested in how a metalvegananticapitalismthrashpunk band could do such a thing in a classy "not a cover" fashion, listen to it here:

it's at the 2:50 mark
it's song 5 on their album Potemkin City Limits, "Die Jugend Marschiert"

i love them so much... and they have a new album out in a few months. WEEEEEE !
Yep, even from 2:31 I got the first whiff of "Summer"

ha ! glad you got it Croz
speaking of Hard-Ons I drove 3 hours after work on a Saturday n watched a weird Hard-Ons show the other night in Newcastle
what's weird is that.... Blackie wasn't on guitar Keish was singing (weird.... kinda) and playing guitar (just weird) Murray was drumming (not weird cos he's now their drummer) Pete was drumming (weird cos he WAS their drummer for 10 years after Keish quit playing drums and singing for them in 2000 - what a year for hard-ons shows THAT was - I musta seen them 8 times that year.... loved it !)
this explains why:
 http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/news/local/32614/Blackie-from-the-Hard-Ons-bashed-by-teenagers-in-hospital-with-skull-fracture
Australian rock legend, “Blackie” of the Hard-Ons is in hospital after two teenagers set bashed him while he was at work.
The 14yr old girl and 16yr old boy assaulted Blackie, who was recently voted one of the 50 best Australian guitarists of all time, at around 1.10am last Friday morning on the Pacific Highway while he was working as a taxi driver.
He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. The boy has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
According to a statement posted by bassist Ray Ahn: Blackie has been in hospital since Thursday night with a skull fracture ,16 stitches and swelling on the brain. He will be there for a few days still, while the docs make sure all tests are done. Police apprehended a 14yr old girl and 16yr old boy shortly after. Thankfully he has been moved from the critical room to where they keep stable patients. He does not remember all details but he is getting better every day. Not sure when he can play music again. We will know more in the coming days. He has already been told he cannot drive for 6 weeks due to his head trauma. Please send him a get-well message through facebook , he’ll read it all when he gets out in a few days time. I’m sure he’ll get better soon. He is a pretty tough cookie. I’ve known him for many years and I know he wants to get back playing music again as soon as possible, but he will go with medical advice, it’s gonna be best to give up playing live for a while, so that he can fully recover and come back fitter than ever.
The Hard-Ons have decided not to cancel their upcoming gigs at the Annandale and Great northern in Newcastle on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd June and will use the shows as a fundraiser for Blackie. The band has announced that “We will perform a set with a new line-up. Ray (bass), Peter Kostic (drums), Murray Ruse (drums) and Keish (lead guitar/vocals) will hit the stage doing what songs we know between us.”
Fans can also make donations vis Zombie Dog Entertainment. According to an recent Facebook update “Unsurprisingly a lot of musicians donated. The generosity is overwhelming. There are metal-heads, indie rockers, shoe-gazers, avant-garde artists, punk bands, solo artists…and total strangers who saw us live or heard Hard-ons and dug it, in the past.”
this ain't the poster for the show i saw, but it's cool:

I hope they string those kids up! Little thugs.
Hey how good are headphones! The outer ear old school style. I guess I havent used them since school. Ive been using the earbud style these last 25 years but have a cheap outer ear set and FUCK ME they kick goals! After listening to Silversun Pickups' Neck Of The Woods on my computer via its speakers I thought it was pretty bland and have been a bit pissed at them, but the headphones make all the difference.

Great reading tonight dudes - that is a crazy f'd up story about the Hard-Ons whitwatersky!
Croz - I listened to the last 3 Silversun Albums today. I still haven't heard the new one. I like all 3 - but, I also like them in order of release with Pikul as my fave. So, I'm hoping I like the new one but, I still don't know?
Today... Silversun Pickups - "Kissing Families" off - Pikul

Yeah Rocket, Pikul is my favourite too. I first heard SSPU with Carnavas when I first met my partner so since knowing her Ive had SSPU's as an underlying soundtrack. I guess that helps keep them close to my heart now.
Regurgitator are touring soon guys, did you see? http://www.ripitup.com.au/article/6008
And the Silversun's are playing the Big Day Out with Underworld no less! It's always the first Friday of the year and with a new boss Ill not be able to go so that sucks big time. I trust they'll do a few side shows *fingers crossed* http://www.ripitup.com.au/article/6073

Snail - Got the Laurels this morning - it is totally amazing. So... they are easily my SOTD: The Laurels - "This City Is Coming Down" off - Plains
Plains also inspired me to go back and listen to all 3 of my Vines CD's this afternoon - which is a first for the Laurels I guess... Plains kind of reminds me of the Vines trying a more shoegaze approach and mixed with Serafin (track 4) and early Ride or Oasis (track 5) or something... but, it's all so good - maybe even done better than the bands I just mentioned! It hits all the right spots in my brain - that's for sure.

I'm not to sure if Distant Locust had much to do with the Birthday Party as they were a mid/late 80s to mid 90s band and Sydney based. My crappy band supported them around 1989 and I remember they played a few supports for bands like Severed Heads. They were part of the late 80s Evil Star (the Evening Star hotel's venue name) roster, along with Lubricated Goat, Box The Jesuit, Kiss My Poodle's Donkey, Butcher Shop, Nunbait, Crow and even a very very early incarnation of You Am I. Like Died Pretty they had a bit of commercial success in Italy of all places.
Another great lost Australian band, The Space Juniors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b54iXj49T64

Box the Jesuit were immense, I knew them quite well as we supported them a few times. The loss of Goose (the lead singer) to cancer was one of the saddest days in the Sydney music scene. Early Massappeal were great but in the end they lost that sound and energy, it's no wonder a few of them ended up in Caligula. Feedtime, Southern Fried Kidneys and Toys Went Berserk were another couple of bands that rocked.
Anyone else counting their change to buy a ticket for ATP in Melbourne Feb 2013? My Bloody Valentine, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Drones, Thee Oh Sees, Einstuerzende Neubauten, Swans, the original line up of Beasts Of Bourbon! $250 a ticket, now I just need to find someone to go with.
Belong - Common Era, an awesome album from 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC8FnGYURus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bYGvCr4y-c |

Oshin's a great LP. I saw Diiv recently on their tour for the record, and also earlier this year, when they were still called 'Dive'. Some excellent stuff on their three 7"s, too.
If they come through your town, check them out. Great live band.
Also, Zach from Diiv plays guitar with Captured Tracks' label-mates Beach Fossils. Here's a great track from their latest 7":

right on em - I did buy Diiv a month ago or so and I love it. I like the Beach Fossils EP that I have too - I never would have made the connection had I not read about it in the Diiv bio. But, after I new it - I could hear it... I personally prefer the Diiv work because of it's "shoegazeiness"... but, buying Diiv got me to listen to my Beach Fossils several more times since - so, hey that's a great reason to be in more than one band right?...
Speaking of bands - one of our guys got burglarized for the second time (the first was 2 years ago) and both of his guitars and his beautiful (only owned for 2 weeks) Lakeland bass got stolen. God damn mother fuckers! Looks like the nail in the coffin for blueshift. I'll let you guys know if anything changes or if I start something else. big drag...
Anyone ever heard Comet, Chendelier Musings?

Hello, don't often post but has anybody heard the new Bob Mould record streaming on Rolling Stone at the moment? http://www1.rollingstone.com/hearitnow/player/bobmould.html Not only does the 5th track 'Steam of Hercules' sound a heck of a lot like the Swervies, he drops 'Never lose that feeling' into the lyrics of the 9th track 'Keep Believing'. That could be a coincidence but I know Bob's a big fan. It's an awesome sounding record anyway! |
