I dont think iTunes works with .wma files. You gotta use mp3's I believe.

Though you can play .wmv files on quicktime (if you download the right codec)? There's bound to be something you can download that will make it work, a convertor or something? I'm sure you aren't the first person to have this problem Croz.

I thought iTunes could see and convert unprotected wma files.

The problem with this is going from one lossy format to another will only make the files sound worse.

I'll get back to you.

Edit:

From what I can tell, if you just drag the wma files into iTunes, then should automagically be converted into mp3 or aac files, depending on your preference settings ( I would stick with mp3 if I were you).

Info here:

http://playlistmag.com/forums/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=4363&Main=3917

If they are protected, e.g. purchased from an online music store based on WiMP, then I think you have to break the DCMA and pay for a program to strip the DRM off the file, like this one:

http://www.soundtaxi.info/

I'm sure there are others. I'm sure you want to re-rip all of your SWD discs, I recommend 192 kbps VBR for those rips...

yep, seems like the stuff ive ripped from my cds to .wma are all protected. Thanks for the tip Boom. I will have to start reripping it seems.

I converted all my .mp3 files to .aac files when i started itunes. Are you saying i could have kept them in .mp3 format? Thats contrary to what i read. I thought they had to all be .aac files to play on an iPod.

Also, Im curious, how do you make those really interesting playlists? Like the one you did for Rainy Days i think? Are they smartlists? I havent been playing with tracklists yet. They take so long to sort out! Is there a quicker way?

Thanks for your help lads.

Nope - I rarely use aac for anything, while it is supposed to sound better as mp3 at the same bitrate, I just wonder in the long term if I ever want to switch to another music player, I'd like to keep my music in the most portable format available, and that's mp3. mp3 plays fine on the iPod.

You can select the songs you want, then go up to the File menu and choose "Make Playlist from Selection" or just choose "New Playlist" and drag songs from your library into the new playlist.

I have some smart playlists - I tag all of the WAB tracks in the comments with "Weekend at Burnies" then I have a smart playlist that compiles all songs with "Burnies" in the comment field and have it update live. Everytime I import a disc, it goes directly into the playlist automagically. I also have a smart playlist called "Recent Additions" that tracks my last 90 days of imports.

I think if you just play around with it, you'll learn it faster than if you try to read any of the documentation/help.

ok, that WAB tip will come in handy. I have titled all wabs like this - Weekend At Burnies 1 Boomer - I ripped them with WMP and said the artist was Weekend At Burnies also. Now im not sure if that is going to help me with iTunes. Oh well.

Loving the fact that when i turn iPod off it restarts in the same place - dont have to hunt for the bloody thing again, especially with audiobooks. Awesome!

The Lost Crowes

For all Black Crowes fans in the audience...this thing is incredible. It's two discs and one of the discs is an entire LP that they never released that happens to be incredibly good, and the other disc is loaded with outtakes and so forth

Interloper highly recomends

just been catchin' up on my reading...
yep Lopasmoka -
the heat has been freakin' insane in the middle of the country! Shweeeeew. My poor poor pregnant wife...
We're on the 3 week count down now dudes. Won't be long til I have a little goil!
also Loper - I thought you loved your local scene!?
what happened?

I mentioned in the WAB thread that I have uncovered gold in my search to do a local WAB. I call it "uncovered" because I don't make it out to bars much anymore...
It's blowing my mind - I have a bunch of them linked in my myspace page if anyone cares to check stuff...
Or be patient for my WAB...

And Mezcal and Steff - I havn't forgotten you guys either...

sucks that it's so hard for me to get this stuff done at the moment...

So today...
The Casket Lottery - "Smoke and Mirrors"
off - Smoke and Mirrors

soooooo goooooood.
check out their myspace page:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=4992840

so... I should just come out and say it.
I'm jealous of you bastards with the secret Burnies!
Croz filled me in - but, I never signed up - and now what...
But, I don't get to get it until I catch up - that's my own self imposed rules.
Later dudes.

Rocket...

Man, I COMPLETELY forgot about that disc. Lemme get that together soon. Damn...I can't believe I forgot that. You know, it's a shame because there's some definate talent in this town (and if you know me, you know I'm brutally picky with bands), but the state of things in this town is the worst it's ever been. It just seems like the ones who should be doing something major are just not getting anything together at all. And beyond that, it probably wouldn't amount to much because the only main club we had for original music just closed due to city related politics so now, there's nowhere central for that type of thing...anyway, lemme bust that disc asap. I'm glad you brought it up.

dudes.

cool Boomer - but, I have to catch up before you keep sending sweetness my way!

Ya Interloper - I know you are very particular! I think most of us HERE are in our own ways...
That sucks about your good club though dude! The opposite has happened here. We have a handful of clubs that are really doing a great job. One in particular is owned by guys in a few bands - so, it was set up to sound good for live shows. Everything I've heard there is always the perfect amount of loudness and the mixing is always perfect. I hate seeing shows where the band just sounds like muddy shit.

Anyway today...
Citites - "Capitol"

you guys have to check these guys out - stellar stuff!

Had a great 'Pod set on the train today:

Ride - Moonlight Medicine
Drilling - Minus the Bear
Switchblade 327 - Brian Setzer Orchestra
Land of the Lost - Swervedriver
Shooting Star - Rhesus
Roll Over - Hermano
One Light Flashes I Love You - The Swirlies
Harmonia - Greyscale

It may be ancient in technology years, but I love my iPod! Battery still gets me through a full week of commuting, even though it is 2.5 years old.

Helmet - Brand New

Holy shit this song kills. Sounds like 92 Helmet all the way. Evidentally it's the same engineer and the exact same tape machine that the first two LP's were done on. I've yet to dig deep into the whole LP, but this song absolutely slays.

Strange - I had put a track in there last week int the Music folder. I don't see it there now with the gDisk app. Has somebody been messing around with the files? Maybe it is time for a password change?

But yes, it is dormant. Perhaps we should assign a different person to upload their SOTD each day. That's what, 2 tracks a month or so per person?

My track o' the day:

I don't know what you guys are talking about...
because I am lame...

I like the new Helmet Croz - it might have been the seedster that was a little weirded out with the vox - but, I think they're good. It's not my favorite - but, it does rock.

But, if you guys want to hear a cool CD check out:
Citites - "writing on the wall"
I posted their link above in this thread...
The whole CD is awesome.
(but, it's not "Helmet type rock")

Paul Kossoff-Tuesday Morning off "BackStreet Crawler". Island has released this thing on CD. Get it!! but word of warning...really only this, the first track is any good. It's a jam lasting about 16 minutes and alone worth the price of the disc. Kos' was lead guitar for FREE...one of my fav bands of all time. He didn't play fast, nor fancy, but the tone he got out of his Strat just slays me. His blues bends are very unique and tasty...they whine. Love ya', Kos..ya shouldna checked out so soon. Great recording quality. Sounds like an amp should sound with just a mic in front of it.

Here's more FREE news, regarding Andy Fraser who founded the group. He is still alive and well despite some recent health problems (to put it simply,he is Gay and contracted AIDS, but the situation appears to be stable with medication). Read the stuff he wrote. Very insightful about growing up in the music business in England at that time. Apparently (and this is a recurrent theme), he knows how to roll a great joint. Have to join him for a smoke sometime!

Today I am mesmerized by the Dandy's entire "Come Down" album. "Be-In" has to be my choice if forced to choose just one.

Good stuff, maynard.

croz - on the ulrichschnauss.com website - is that list of ten albums just his favorite or ones he plans to remix? Because Chapterhouse's Whirpool remix is in the top spot...

Click this on, and my favourite song today will start playing. FREE-Baby Be My Friend. Live in Stockholm. Excellent recording quality. Don't know how/where this guy got it. Got some good pix of Koss as well.

Next, go to this site and register for Personal Use (harmless). That way you can zoom or order for prints. Heavily copyrighted, obviously. Dial in any band/artist you like and there are great pix, usually taken concert or backstage. They've got some great ones of Paul Kossoff and a couple of FREE. Yep, SWD is there (4 pix). Looks like Adam, Jimmy, Adi and Graham. Adi is holding a bottle of Rolling Rock in one of the pix. Fuckin' Ay, Adi!!

Deerhoof - Milk Man.

For those of you who get it, there's a fantastic article on these guys in the new Tape Op magazine. You can get a free subscription. Great for us home recording dudes.

My last Line6 POD is in a landfill somewhere. Seriously. I broke it in a slightly drunken fit of rage.

Haha. Yeah, I didn't think they were all that great, but somehow, those Deerhoof assholes are getting pheonominal guitar sounds out of them.
