Eugene - I really like the melodic metal of ISIS (I put one of their songs on my WAB 3). Red Sparrowes is composed of their guitarist and bassist plus a bunch of other hardcore/slowcore band members. Would you call this stuff Progressive Metal? Glad you like it. Here's a good review of their album:

Yep, there are some prog elements in there, but not the obnoxious variety. And, I do hear some slowcore at times. No hardcore whatever, at least to my ears. They are certainly high art..can't really explain beyond that. I'm going to go back and listen to ISIS, and probably go and buy the full Red Sparowe CD (s). Their website is fabulous BTW...great graphics and web design. Talking 'bout websites, Motion Soundtracks' is the most artistic I have seen anywhere. Musta cost them a mint.

Hey Croz... After going through that BSS album I kinda went 'huh?' too, guess I was expecting YFIIP part-2. After a few spins this one really is starting to grow on me, but you're right - it is busy sounding. Guess that happens when there's something like 16 members in the band now. As for singles, "Superconnected" could make a nice one, "It's All Gonna Break" would be an awesome one too if you could shorten it's 10+ minute length (even so it's a near perfect 10 minute long song). "Canada vs. America" off the bonus EP could get airplay, but it has a funky beginning that the top-40 alternative radio stations prob would avoid. Still a stong contender for the my fav of the year award.

BTW - Auzzies are getting robbed, the disc goes for CDN $16 to $18 up here.

Canada Vs America indeed! Its pretty busy though still! I guess I really was hoping to hear the lyrics like i could on YFIIP most of the time. I was hoping to have something as amazing as Looks Just Like The Sun for that style. Anyway it would be hard to do with 16 ppl contributing. I wonder why they need all of them. I doubt the whole troupe would fly to Australia to play for me and that sucks. Why do they need so many?

$32 was better than the $56 it was going to cost me to get it sent over! On average cds (new) cost about $30 in Australia. So i wasnt to worried.

Its on their "sept000" disk. Picked it up when we saw them at HoB a while back. I haven't posted my opinion yet but they might get my vote for the best rock band out there right now... the live show is incredible.

Is that the same as the Dylan tune "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"? I know SWD have those lyrics in one of their songs, maybe that's it?

If you wanna hear a great version of that tune, try the Byrds' version on the album "Ballad of Easy Rider". Amazing harmonies.

em - I just found out about "Goo" last week!
now you tell me "Dirty" is the same with the bonus goodness? Damn them and there enticing music...
I actually just bought Goo last year when I picked up Sonic Nurse - wish I would have known and held out a bit longer.
I doubt that I'll buy them unless I find it used somewhere - I was kinda hoping one of my friends would pick it up - wink wink

Today...

rocket,

yeah, the "dirty" one came out a while back...over a year ago, I think.
"goo" was just recently released, within the last couple months.
have you seen the video for goo? I mean they made videos for every song on the lp. it was originally only available on VHS, but they've now released a DVD called "corporate ghost" and it includes all of the goo videos and more.

another fantastic sonic youth related video to look for is one called "1991 - the year punk broke". it's got some classic live footage and tour video stuff etc. thurston is in top form.
it's been well over ten years since I've seen that video, but I recall footage of dinosaur jr, nirvana, gumball, and a few others.

I usually get gift certificates to record shops for x-mas. if that happens this year, the deluxe CDs will be on my list.
