I've been meaning to check that lp out for a while.

oh, and if I'm not mistaken, they actually sampled brad laner's guitar insanity from medicine's "one more" for a song called "barnowl"?

The Surgery album is really good. I'm hoping on including a track on the next WAB egression. I can't decide if "We Need Starpower" or "Thursday's Radiation" is the best track. They are both in my "Burnies Next" iTunes playlist, so I'll have to make a decision soon.

I just got this very song sent to me by a friend. Sounds an awful lot like some Stereolab I think.

if you're interested, try comparing it to the medicine track I put on my first WAB. it's that opening guitar sound that sounds like a swarm of amplified bees has made a hive out of your inner skull.

I haven't heard Decoder Ring, but I'd love to!
thanks much for the offer, croz!

...and I'll be happy to send a couple extra goodies to you in my soon-coming WAB installment.

Interloper, you are right again. I have listened to Dots and Loops a few times recently, especailly in the snow (it seemed to fit that environment).

Em I have some time today. Ill put together a pack now and send it before i leave for another month tomorrow. Interesting to hear the medicine track next to the Caribou one. Bees indeed.

Yeah man, Dots and Loops is my favorite. Flower called Nowhere is incredible among others. Some of the earlier lp's are great too. Peng! is pretty fun. That one was when they were still a MBV wannabe.

I'm partial to the later stereolab stuff, myself (especially "dots and loops"), but I wonder, what about the earlier stereolab stuff, exactly, makes you say that they were a mbv wannabies?

I hear moog, I hear repetition, and in general, I hear a band that was pretty influenced by krautrock stuff (like can and neu among others) and maybe some velvet underground.

also, mbv has a pretty diverse back-catalog themselves (at least four distinct styles/sounds from "geek" to "loveless" as far as I can hear), so I wonder which era of mbv are you referring to?

Since I've been gone, Favorites. . .
Since you've been gone - Kelly Clarkson
I shit out the tabloid baby - Britney Spears
Oh, man - Kevin Federline
We finally went away - Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Well really I've still been listening to the Constantines,
and MOTORHEAD
and Judas fuckin Priest, man
Not much new stuff, the college radio here is pretty cool, but nothing stands out from anything else.

Where's all the swirling textures that still rock out nowadays????
Oh, the Constantines have a new album out soon, I have Shine a Light, it's good.
BRMC have a new record coming, it might be here by now.
I saw a VH1 show ultimate albums about KISS: Alive.
It fucking rocked, and I've always hated KISS. Maybe I'll pick that up.

Nice! Good choice! I got to see them twice on that tour! The cool thing about those recordings is they were all limited editions (1000 of each show made), and after they sold out, the band and disclive allowed fans to trade them freely on torrent sites etc. I pretty much have every show from that first reunion tour now. Let me know if you need another hook up!

today, "Forever," The Charlatans off of Us And Us Only. The Charlatans are another one of those bands I go through phases of listening to for a week or so straight. Drives my wife crazy, especially when it's a band like the Pixies. "What is he screaming about, why is he so angry?" Ha! Good times!

That was a pretty cool show! It's amazing how good they still sound after all of these years. Frank can still holler with the best of them, and Joey is still killer on guitar.
I can't wait to get my hands on the Newport Folk Festival performance they did. I believe that was thier first acoustic show they have ever performed. Maybe the wife can dig that one! :)

Speaking of, I know Kim's neighbor and I'm told she's practicing with a new batch of people. I have no clue whether it's gonna be more Breeders or not, but it looks like we're gonna get some fresh tunes.

Definately Loveless. Or so I thought, mainly pertaining to Peng. Anything after Dots and Loops didn't really do much for me.

OK... finally got my work cleaned up from being in LA. Now I have time to do what I usually do on my lunch hour

Song du jour: "Astral Weeks" - Secret Machines, from "The Road Leads Where It's Led" EP. Neato MBV sounds on a Van Morrison cover. Brilliant. jamesg, I saw you name this on hayseed's "faves for 05" thread. I'd have to agree.

Also: Diggin very many tracks from "Guero" by Beck. This disc meshed perfectly with the vibe I was picking up while in LA for the first time.

Guilty Pleasure: "No Room For Emotion" - Faster Pussycat

Couldn't agree more, J-Mo. I was listening to Come On, Feel the Illinoise earlier today. I think "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." is one of the most beautifully depressing songs of the year. It's strange, that song almost makes you feel sorry for him. My song of the day off that album, though, has got to be:

"They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhhh!"
Although "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out To Get Us!" is a pretty great song, too.

(He also wins the award for greatest song titles of the year, my favorite being "The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish An Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself In the Morning, or, We Apologize For the Inconvenience But You're Gonna Have To Leave Now, or, 'I Have Fought The Big Knives and Will Continue To Fight...")
