Doug Gillard

You guys HAVE to check him out. Doug was the genius guitarist for Guided by Voices. His solo stuff is INCREDIBLE. I checked his site and lo and behold, he's done shows with Adam.

My mate works for their label and I've just come home to find he's sent me a promo copy!

Loved the song "Fresh" and can't wait to hear the rest of it.

Just discovered the Mike Joyce show as well on this station. Really good. I heard some really good tracks. I might be late on this, but a new find for me. Some interesting stuff there.

Snail I find the hook in "I don't really mind" to be near perfect. A previous me would have focused on the stereolab breakdown in the middle of that song but now I tolerate it waiting for the miracle hook to come back.

Yeah, I still hear Stereolab but I don't care. Listened to this record twice today.

I also recently bought the '10 Besnard Lakes release - based on an AF recomendation from somewhere...
It's really good. Both beautiful and rockin' at the same time. There are a few immediate standouts for me - but, every song is great. Most songs slowly build up, interesting guitar work throughout, male and female vocals...

Hey, 'Loper, have you checked out any Richard Buckner? Doug Gillard has played on his records and sometimes does shows with him as his second guitarist. I really love Richard's work, it's a little more countrified, but really really beautiful. Really nice guy too, and totally underrated imho.

And along the same lines....the new Sun Kil Moon. Holy F, what a gorgeous record. All nylon string. I know that Josh from Bolts of Melody works with him too, and told me Mark and Adam are his two favorite artists ever.

anyone else get the QOTSA deluxe edition of R yet?

It is really awesome - the 2nd disk is amazing. I'm not really sure if there was any re-mastering of the original disk - but, all the extra tracks really make it totally worth getting...

Adam Franklin - Ramonesland

Id love it even more if the vocals were up a fraction in the mix. Beautiful song, from what I can garner through the instruments.

That's funny Croz - I love the level of the mix. I always seem to debate with the guys about our songs - I love the vocals lower in the mix - almost more like an extra instrument with the focus being on the guitars... that style can completely change the dynamic of a song. The Life and Times seem to do a lot as well with the vocal being low and difficult to hear the words in the mix - and the singer has an awesome voice too. Lots of bands do - I always seem to lean towards that style...

Agree. As an audio engineer/nerd the vocals three times louder than everything drives me up a wall. Save it for Mariah Carey, this is rock and roll.

Yeah but what I can hear from this track is so beautiful I want to hear the whole thing. Some parts are quite clear and others drowned by instruments. Sure I hear ya what you are saying and Raise is my favourite SWD album partly for the same reason. I guess I could look up the lyrics instead. Anyone know them?

Interloper, The Motel Beds are easy to understand in comparison.

The new Darker My Love is so - so - so disappointing.

I was able to find 6 descent tracks out of the 11 - a few of which are actually pretty good. But, all of the heavy sonic guitar that drew me in on their first 2 albums is gone - COMPLETELY! The other 5 tracks are these ridiculous Grateful Dead sounding jam songs that despite the 2 vocalists great harmonies and overall sound are ruined by uninspired country jam band riffs.

so sad

So... I've been listening to the new Darker My Love a lot - mainly because I bought it! - so, it got more attention than some albums that I'm not struck with the first few listens that I snagged from a friend or whatever...
anyway, I mentioned above that there were only 6 good tracks. Well, these 6 are pretty killer - and the others are growing on me... I still think they are a little Deady - or just boring - but, they have some good qualities too. Just be warned - it's a very different listen than the other albums - when I wipe the slate and just consider this album on it's own I've been diggin it.

today...

Jeeeeesus - new disappointment after new disappointment...

I just checked some samples from the new Film School and it sounds really drum poppy with lame clap tracks and cheese.

I'm hoping that I warm up to it listening to the full album stream tonight while I sketch.
check this dudes and judge for yourselves:
(just scroll down a smidge):
http://music.msn.com/music/listeningbooth/

hopefully, it won't be as bad as I'm imagining. The thing is - the singers vocals are always so good that - that in itself will make me like it to a certain degree. But, I'd love to hear another guitar killer like "Lectric" on the new one!
