"Motor Away" was such a high point, energy-wise, it seemed a misstep to downshift so drastically to "Jaguar E." And too bad they had to clear out for some DJ dance nonsense (at first I thought the tight schedule was for a neighborhood sound curfew). Still, at 10:22 they coulda fit in one more!
Swervedriver1971 Posted - 04/08/2012 : 10:19:49 PM
I was at the LA gig. I've seen them about a dozen times now since '98 and I think that was the best they ever sounded to my recollection. Many of the subtle guitar hooks were much clearer than I can recall hearing them in... ever! (I think credit belongs to Dave of Nightmare Air (and formerly Film School) for working the sound board. Not 100% on that but I believe it to be the case.)

Anyway, myself and my good friend and fellow Swervie Veronica drove up from The OC and we met up at the Rainbow Bar and Grill with the same crew we saw the last 2 L.A. shows with: Bret (who runs the SWD MySpace page;) Kimo an L.A. music club scene aficionado; Whitney and Susie who drove up from San Diego (Whit kept getting Suz to yell out strange requests during the show like "Bubbling Up.")

Before hand, whilst in line out front we ran into a guy who had on yet another version of the Jesus Loves the Swervies shirt (larger logo printed in a shiny grey/silver.) I asked him if it was new or very old. He said his daughter (standing there) didn't want him to say. Apparently it would embarrass her that her late 40/ early 50-something father had flown up to see the Swervies in Seattle, rented a car and driven down to Portland and then flew back to L.A. (S.F. was too far to drive and more airfare was apparently overdoing it.) I was impressed never the less. He took a picture of our crew. It's on SWD's FB page I think.

I kept the set list on my phone but someone beat me to posting it here. (I had "Son of Mother Fucker" heh heh.) The new DVD was available at the show for $10, shirts $20, a poster for the S.F. show (none for L.A.) and other stuff. The Swervies started on time and finished about 8 mins before the 10:30 curfew as the club began a dance party right away. I hoped for at least one more b-side but they sounded so good that the lack of b-sides didn't matter to me. I did enjoy Motor Away and Deep Wounds quite a bit.

We went down the street for pizza after the show and to give all the booze in our system a chance to settle, read all the famous and not so famous signatures on the wall (Tom Morello, Demi Moore, Danny Banaduce,) before parting ways and turning in for the night.... and until next time... ;)

Haha my four year old son is turning into a swervie. His favorite song is sci-flyer. Its a proud moment as a father. Haha we were driving and he was like "what is Adam saying?"

Jag E and Cars Converge from DC up on YT. Some annoying dirt/rumbles got added to Jag E during upload again. Nice toe-tapping sync and walls of guit noise during Jag E, a transcendant Cars Converge, and minor pre- and post-gig footage. Enjoy!

Awesome guitar man....looked sick with the fresh blood splatters in Boston. I was with the guy who snapped the pic and we both assumed (incorrectly) that it was vintage. He got amazing tone out of it...
casey Posted - 04/07/2012 : 4:04:36 PM
That's actually my guitar that Adam loaned from me for the tour.
It's a "heavy relic" ltd edition custom shop Jazzmaster.
I thought he would like the "broken in feel" of the guitar.
He told me he really likes it:)
I hung out w/ him in Chicago and he kept reassuring me that he had got all the blood off the guitar. I said I didnt mind..ha!!
The blood was from a blister that had opened up ...ouch.
specialk Posted - 04/07/2012 : 07:32:18 AM
that would most definitely not be a squier and if it's a thin skin it's been well abused very quickly. that's actually close to scary!

I'll third (or is that fourth?) the recommendation for Motor Away. I've seen Guided By Voices at least twice, and they must have played it at one of the shows I saw. (If you're not familiar, Guided By Voices shows routinely have 37 to 42 songs per set - but that's a whole different topic.)

Swervedriver managed to pay respect to GbV and yet make it their own. In my recollection, Swervedriver's version wouldn't have sounded out of place on Raise or Mezcal Head - especially with the car theme. That's the hallmark of a good cover, to my way of thinking.

I wonder what the Swervedriver connection to GbV is? Just fans or if there's more to it?

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. BTW - Here's a setlist from one of the GbV shows I saw:
http://www.gbvdb.com/album.asp?albumid=1421
What was interesting were the covers in that setlist. GbV normally drinks a lot of Budweiser before/during their shows - but this night belonged to Jack Daniels - they were beyond drunk. Oddly enough - their own songs were perfect, but the covers were terrible. It was funny - since they'd alternate - terrible cover - spot on original - terrible cover - spot on original - etc.

Im no expert, but Id say its 1958-1959 and color looks like sonic blue. The gold anodized pickguard were only used from 58-59. The guitar looks original to me. And my ears are still craving more of its sweetness.

I doubt Adam's second Jazzmaster was vintage. It looked to be a reissue to me and sounded like one, too. Maybe an american thin skin with an anodized pickguard. It was sonic blue, too, so pretty sure it's not a Squire Mascis. The blood was from a few shows earlier on this tour. Maybe Boston?

My mistake... then I missed stag completely. I just assumed they were behind schedule because when I went to the stage at 8:50 hardly anyone was there and the venue staff said they were behind schedule. So I went back to the bar.

Greetings all. I haven't posted in some time but wanted to give a HEADS UP for the L.A. show Saturday.

Thing one is that, due to new management at The Key Club, the set times have been moved up. New times are as follows:

Swervedriver Key Club LA Saturday April 7th
NEW TIMES:
Doors: 7:00pm.
First band/Bixby Knolls: 7:30-8:00pm
Heaven: 8:15-8:45pm
Swervedriver: 9:00-10:30pm
Strict Curfew!: 10:30

Thing two is that myself (Keith), Bret, Whitney, Susie and Veronica are doing another meet-up like we did for the last two L.A. shows. This time we are meeting at the Rainbow Bar and Grill about a block over from Key Club starting at 5pm. All are welcome to join us. I hope to take over the patio in front.

I guess it was drown out by the three guitarists, bass, drums, and tambourine.

That wasn't Stag, though. That was Hawkeye, the 2nd band of the 3 that played that night (Swervedriver included). Personally, I didn't care for them at all. Stag came on at 9:00 PM and was off by 9:30.

Okay - I've uploaded my pics of the Seattle show. This is from my camera phone, but I did get pretty close to the stage, so there's a few decent shots.

Haha reviewing the set list posted above apparently they did play Paris avenue? Where was I? I remember motor bike and duel... did I get sucked into a time warp promptly after duel? So I guess I amend my previous statement about not playing Paris Ave and out... they still didn't play out though.
likkyla Posted - 04/05/2012 : 11:46:13 AM
Haha my 4 year old son was curious as to what the DVD was so I told him to put it in... thinking that he'd probably turn it off right away (guitar noise and him being phonophobic and all).... sci-flyer comes on and he's like "I like this music... can we listen to it in the car?" Haha yes we can little one... welcomed change from yo gabba gabba on CD.

Anyway Seattle was awesome. I'm a little sad they didn't play Paris avenue or out but save for that.... fucking amazing night .. as with every show in Seattle it was running an hour late. So when the second local band didn't show up I wasn't disappointed ... haha. Speaking of disappointment though I was looking forward to seeing heaven so when the swervedriver tour drummer walked by me I was like "where's your band man?" He laughed... apparently they were heading for San Francisco... so Seattle and Portland wont get to see heaven live.

I was there last night and it was BAD-ASS. I have been a fan since '92 and have seen the band 5 times starting with their Off-Ramp show here in Seattle back in '93. Last night may have been the best I've seen them from a fan's perspective as they played stuff I'd never heard live (Girl on a Motorbike, Jaguar, etc.) and the set was liberally dosed with b-sides and lesser known album cuts, particularly from Raise. Motor Away was boss, too. I about freaked when they did Pile-up and Sunset. Two of my favorite jams from the first record. Basically, they totally delivered.

Also, the guitars were so loud in a good way. When Adam hit the wah on some of those choruses there was white hot molten lava coming out of the speakers.

Didn't realize the Live in Australia was a DVD. Hope that will be available on the website at some point as I didn't have any cash and totally missed picking that up.

I arrived near the end of their set, so I missed most of it, but I liked what I heard. Enough to buy both of the EPs they had for sale.

Seemed to be basically power-pop - local reviewers have compared them to The Who or Cheap Trick.

They have a website - here's the song they closed with:
http://www.themightystag.com/2011/07/20/these-times-are-for-kexp/

Heh - it's called These Times I just realized that I saw their set list on the stage - but I didn't realize it was theirs until I looked at the CDs today.

BTW - Steve told a Swervedriver story. He said that when their first album came out, he was working in a record shop in Camden (UK) "The Center Of The Universe". I'm paraphrasing here, but I think he said that someone from Austria told him to check out this band called "Swerved Over" (or some equally funny distortion of the name.) He was like - well hmmm - how good than these guys be? He put the album on in the store at low volume - and was blown away. He said he's been a big fan ever since.

(Steve - if you're reading - I hope I didn't mangle your story too badly.)

Cheers,
Paul

I have to be honest....unless you KNOW what Jimmy is playing ahead of time, it's almost impossible to hear him in the mix live. I can hear him because I know what parts he's playing most of the time...if that makes sense.

Seattle - Neumos - April 4th, 2012

Set List - as written - well, typed this time, not in Adam's handwriting:

Satansville
Scrawl & Scream
Never Lose
Pile-up
These Times
Deep Seat
Deep Wound
The Birds
Motor Away
Son of Jaguar E
Sandblasted
Sunset
Wrong treats
Son of Mustang
Rave Down
--------------
Girl on Motorbike
Cars
Duel

They played "Plan 7 Star Satellite 10" in a loop as the band walked on stage. They kind of noodled along with it for a bit then kicked into Last Train To Satansville

Special thanks to the guy breaking down the gear who noticed me furiously copying off the drummer's copy of the set list, and handed it to me. That was above and beyond the call of duty, and it's appreciated.

Also - they were selling THE promo copy of Ejector. Yes - the ONE. I almost don't want to talk about it - but it's the ONE. Let's just say the disc has 14 tracks - not 13.

I have the show poster as well - it was free with purchase. If there's interest, I can try to scan it and post it later. Oh yeah - I have some photos and video snippets too - but they'll have to wait until I can sync my phone at work.

Other merch - Sydney DVD, 2 Vinyl Singles of Adam's, Spent Bullets, aforementioned ESR CD, t-shirts (Boys & Girls versions of "Jesus Loves..." and a single style of the ESR Swervedriver logo)

Side note: One of the opening bands in Seattle was Stag. That's a local supergroup that includes Steve Mack of That Petrol Emotion. A long time ago, another band with Steve - Anodyne (aka Marfa Lights) - opened for Swervedriver at the late Seattle nightclub RCKNDY. This was during the 99th Dream tour. Swervedriver played another gig a few months after that at the Crocodile Cafe and then eventually headed off to Australia....

(Hmmm - the list of shows at RCKNDY doesn't seem to indicate Anodyne/Marfa Lights opening for Swervedriver in 1998. The listing I found says the bands were Libido and Lucky Me. I do know I spoke with Steve there - I'm pretty sure I bought their CD Tensor directly from him. Well - if they didn't open for Swervedriver, I definitely saw Steve at Adam's solo show at the Comet Tavern - so there! )

Cheers,
Paul

sux about the sound for you as well. is it the venues or the sound person or both? at least all the venues here is Detroit sound good

Enjoyed the show at Bottom Lounge last night. The sound was best in direct line with the speakers. Should have a recording up on dimeadozen.org in the next few days.
Pmason Posted - 04/04/2012 : 07:42:16 AM
Caught the Chicago show at Bottom Lounge last night - great as ever!

I thought the venue was pretty cool, but I actually had a little beef with the sound. At centerstage, back towards the sound board it was a little muddy at times. Some songs really stood out more powerfully than ever, I thought, (Out, Last Train, Son of Jag E!) but a couple others seemed a little harder to hear clearly -- sci flyer, rave down. Maybe, that's what i get for not climbing near the front of the stage per usual!

Set list played pretty similarly to Boston with a couple exceptions, (Sci Flyer, notably. Woohoo!).

OH, I wanted to note that I dtd see (and purchase) the Sydney DVD, so my guess is that they should be available at shows moving forward. Eager to view it tonight.

Great shots Boom! Particulary like the shot between Jimmys foldback speakers and your trip in. The later actually looks like a bunch of piled up cars. Tripy but relevant!

the grog shop show in cleveland was excellent EXCEPT you couldn't hear adam sing really. this was the second show i saw at this venue. i will never go there again due to poor sound. it sux they didn't play the beachland ballroom or Detroit

i've never seen anything like it, people went apeshit for the setlists! one girls jumped out of nowhere and dove on stage to get one, insane

no dvd or pre-order list for it. looked like they were selling promo copies of Ejector, weird they didn't have the remasters

also swd ate at the same restaurant we did, but we were there a little earlier sadly and missed them

I spliced together 5 little snippets of Neon Lights Glow into a vid I made, made sure it wasn't ad-enabled and still people in Germany can't watch my vid because of the copyright bs and the "may violate copyright' notice is still next to that vid in my account 2 yrs. later.
